Ug Calc

In The App Store!

Ug Calc is a simple Geometric Unsharpness calculator for Industrial Radiography.

All you have to do is plug in the distance from the Object (source side of the object or weld) to the film and to the source distances, along with the source size (diagonal).

This is not a difficult calculation to make but using this app makes it simpler and no need to keep looking up formulas.

NOTE:  The source side of the object or weld on double wall exposure welds with Single Wall viewing is the inside surface of the pipe near the film.  Basically the wall thickness (and maybe reinforcement).

On other welds it is more obvious where the source side of the object or weld is.

Click on the image below to enlarge.

Example problem: What is the Ug when the weld to film distance is 0.5 inches and the weld to source distance is 8 inches with a source size of 0.180 inches?

Answer: 0.011 inches of Ug.   (Ug = (0.5 x 0.180)/8)

Not doing any classes in the early spring

I’ve gotten several emails about classes, so I thought I’d post this update.

I’ve decided not to start the class this spring.

I’m not sure when I may start dong them.

There are others doing the class but I do not know them.

Code 313

Code 313 Users Manual

Code 313 is a calculator for interpreting industrial radiographs in accordance with ASME B31.3.

Please read this description and watch the video below (Coming soon) before purchasing to decide if this is the app for you.

The app caculates the most common discontinuities such as cracks, incomplete penetration, internal porosity, slag inclusions, and undercutting.

It also calculates IQI (penetrameter) sizes.  It has three sections, welds with no reinforcement, and welds reinforced on one or both sides.

NOTE: The calculations for welds with reinforcement are based on the MAXIMUM allowable reinforcement.  The code references the “ESTIMATED” reinforcement, so use the numbers in the app with this in mind and as just references.

This app DOES NOT replace the code itself nor the need to have the code.  There are many other issues in the code that need to be referenced, this is just a calculator.  One common example is you need the porosity ccomparison charts from the code for reference and need to be able to reference the rules and conditions.

Use this app at your own risk.  No guarantee is made.  recommended use is as a second opinion to your own interpretation.

X-Ray Timer Version 2.0 in App Store – And it’s free!

The 2.0 revision of X-Ray Timer has been approved by Apple and is in the App Store.

This revision added Se-75 as an Isotope selection. I used the values by the manufacturer for the radiation output and the published values for the shielding value of the steel. I don’t actually own any Selenium sources myself, but several people requested this feature.

I decided to go ahead and make this app free for the community. Sales dropped off enough to the point I wouldn’t really get paid anymore so I decided to make it free for everyone. Hopefully now it will be the new standard way work is done. Spread the work around.

I’m working on a Web App version for computer browsers and other smart phones.

Barricade Updated to Version 2.0

Apple just approved Version 2.0 of my Barricade iPhone App!

It should show up in your updates in the App Store on the phone sometime within the next 24 Hours.

I added the ability to change the number of Half-value layers and added Selenium 75 as an isotope selection.

Be sure to watch the App Store for the update.

X-Ray Timer will be updated soon to add Selenium 75 as an isotope.

I hope to develop web app version of them for other smart phones. I may switch all future development to web apps to make it faster and easier to develop.

iPhone Apps Working in iOS4

Apple renamed the iPhone Operating System to iOS4 for the fourth version. This is because it runs the iPhone, iPod, and iPad, not just the iPhone.

I have access to the pre-release version as a developer and am running it on my phone now. Barricade and X-Ray Timer work the same as always so don’t be scared to upgrade.

The update is available to everyone for free June 21’st and I recommend it very much.

One BIG change is that the update is now free for iPod Touch users! I have spoken to iPod Touch users that couldn’t run the apps because they didn’t pay for the OS update. Now it is free so I recommend to do so. (only generation 2 & 3 can run the update)

Barricade and Shot Timer work on the iPad

I tested them both and they are both functional on the iPad.

I’m curious how many techs may get these for use in the field.

X-Ray Timer App

NEW for iOS 10.  Now at Version 4.0.

This is an application to replace the aggravating usage of slide rules to calculate radiography shot times.  It is applicable to Industrial Radiographers working with radioactive materials (not x-ray machines).

Barricade App now on iPod Touch

When I first uploaded it to iTunes, I accidently put the setting as iPhone only.

I corrected it and now you can install and use the barricade calculator app on your iPod touch now.
